The third time, the software was updated.
The second time, the system was rebooted. The first time I took the car to the dealership to resolve the problem, they could not replicate the fault so did nothing to correct it. Once the engine is off for some time, the screen comes on as it should when the car is started.
Turning the engine off then on again doesn't fix the problem. Once it happens, it is not easy to reset quickly. There seems to be no obvious pattern of time of day, temperature, etc that is associated with the fault. Other controls such as volume, fan speed, etc, which are manual, work but the controls for temperature, audio, navigation, clock can't be used. It just stays black and doesn't respond to touch. I am enjoying my new Ford Escape Titanium most of the time, but about once per week, the touch screen doesn't start up when the engine is turned on.
